Academy Voters Confirm Not Seeing ‘Dune: Part Two’: “I'm Not Rushing For Another Three Hours Of ‘Dune’”

This Sunday marks the occasion for the prestigious Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars, with films such as ‘Conclave,’ ‘The Brutalist,’ and ‘Emilia Pérez’ anticipated to garner several awards. A notable nominee in 5 categories including Best Picture is ‘Dune: Part Two’ — which many cinema-goers and critics feel was snubbed in several categories that the first ‘Dune’ was nominated for.

According to discussions with four anonymous voters from the Academy, the lack of nominations stem from the voters simply not watching Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi sequel.

In an interview with EW, these voters admitted to not viewing the film. One voter commented, "The first ‘Dune,’ I couldn't get through; I'm not rushing for another three hours of Dune," leading all four to exclude ‘Dune: Part Two’ from their Best Picture ballots.

The full quote: “I'm bummed because I haven't seen ‘The Substance’ or I'm Still Here yet. The first ‘Dune,’ I couldn't get through; I'm not rushing for another three hours of ‘Dune.’ There's still time to re-evaluate, but I really struggled. Knowing myself, ‘Anora’ or ‘The Brutalist’ I'd expect myself to vote for, but I found one of them a bit silly, one of them exploitative. I'm sad to say, it's a process of elimination guiding me [to ‘A Complete Unknown’] and not passion for these works. Hearing myself say these things, perhaps I should abstain. I think, after a talk with my therapist, I will probably abstain [altogether].”

It's puzzling how the Academy selects its voters, given their apparent lack of familiarity with the nominees and resistance to lengthier films. It appears the Academy is in need for more informed participants in the voting process.
