Lionsgate Partners With AI Firm ‘Runway’ To Generate Video From Its Existing Film And Television Shows
Lionsgate have partnered with AI startup company Runway to assist in the development of projects from the studio’s 27 year old film and television catalog.
Runway will generate AI cinematic videos as fully realized features and short content with their new model for Lionsgate, and will spark the beginning of AI fully producing and creating films and shows for a major studio within existing IP. This includes the likes of ‘John Wick’ and ‘The Hunger Games’ within their 20,000+ asset library of film and tv works.
“Runway is a visionary, best-in-class partner who will help us utilize AI to develop cutting-edge, capital-efficient content creation opportunities,” said Lionsgate Vice Chair Michael Burns. “Several of our filmmakers are already excited about its potential applications to their pre-production and post-production process. We view AI as a great tool for augmenting, enhancing and supplementing our current operations.”
Runway co-founder and CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela commented on the partnership between companies: “We’re committed to giving artists, creators and studios the best and most powerful tools to augment their workflows and enable new ways of bringing their stories to life. The history of art is the history of technology and these new models are part of our continuous efforts to build transformative mediums for artistic and creative expression. The best stories are yet to be told. Lionsgate has an incredible creative team and a clear vision for how AI can help their work – we’re excited to help bring their ideas to life.”
Runway launched in 2018 in Manhattan and their ‘about us’ reads:
“We believe that AI systems applied to audiovisual content will forever change art and creativity. Since 2018, Runway has been at the forefront of AI media ensuring that the future of content creation is accessible, controllable and empowering for everyone. We bring research into production within weeks instead of years, and we embed research into our engineering and product teams, instead of having each team work in silos. We are laser-focused on applying research to product development and therefore broadening access to AI-backed experiences for our users.”
Lionsgate’s new partnership just happens to be confirmed as the studio looks to depart from Starz since acquiring them in 2016.
