Coralie Fargeat’s ‘The Substance’ premiered at the 77th Annual Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2024, and was well-received by critics and audience members, leading to a 13-minute standing ovation — the longest at the 2024 festival.

Fargeat’s satirical body-horror film tackles the story of an aging Hollywood movie star (played by Demi Moore), who is offered a laboratory-made substance which promises to transform her into an enhanced version of herself (played by Margaret Qualley).

The film has been submitted for consideration as a musical/comedy at the 2025 Golden Globes, rather than a drama — which many speculated would not work out for the title due to its horror content.

Even at the film’s TIFF premiere, the audience was full of squeals and jerks in reaction to the ‘The Substance’s’ gory nature. However, the film also leans on its satirical side to counter-balance the horror elements, giving the film a chance of a Golden Globe nomination in the ‘comedy’ category.

Demi Moore is currently the fan favorite for a nomination (and win) for Best Actress In A Comedy Or Musical. If the film was submitted as a drama, Moore would have been up against Angelina Jolie (‘Maria’), Nicole Kidman (‘Babygirl’), Saoirse Ronan (‘The Outrun’) and Tilda Swinton (‘ The Room Next Door’).
