‘The Piano Lesson’ To Open 60th Chicago International Film Festival, From Director Malcolm Washington And Star John David Washington
The 60th Chicago International Film Festival will open with Netflix film ‘The Piano Lesson,’ from first time director and co-writer Malcolm Washington. Lead star of the flick, John David Washington, will be in attendance and presented with the Spotlight Award.
Opening day of the festival lands on October 16, 2024.
Malcolm Washington’s feature is an adaptation of the August Wilson play. Denzel Washington serves as producer on the film alongside Todd Black. Malcolm Washington’s sister, Katia Washington, serves as executive producer, Pauletta Washington (Malcolm Washington’s mother) plays the role of Mama Ola.
The story is set in 1936 Pittsburgh in the aftermath of the Great Depression, following the Charles family and the family piano. In the play, the focus stems on the arguments between brother and sister who have different ideas on what to do with the piano, which was made by an enslaved ancestor.
John David Washington stars alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Ray Fisher, Michael Potts, Erykah Badu, and Skyler Aleece Smith, Danielle Deadwyler and Corey Hawkins.
