Ayo Edebiri is on board to pen the screenplay and star in A24's upcoming 'Barney' film.

Since 2019, the project has been shaping up, initiated by a collaboration between Mattel Films and Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions with A24 to bring the beloved childhood icon to the big screen.

Originally airing from 1992 to 2009, 'Barney & Friends' became a fundamental part of many children's viewing habits, featuring Barney the dinosaur, who used songs and dances to impart valuable lessons on friendship.

The production of 'Barney' will be managed by Kevin McKeon and Andrew Scannell at Mattel, with Robbie Brenner of Mattel taking the lead on production, joined by Kaluuya and Rowan Riley.

Coming up, Edebiri will appear in the A24 horror thriller 'Opus,' which debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. She is also returning for season four of the FX series 'Bear,' a role that has brought her Emmy recognition. Edebiri is also involved in future projects like James L. Brooks’ 'Ella McCay' and Luca Guadagnino’s 'After the Hunt.' Her prior writing includes work on 'Dickinson' and 'What We Do In the Shadows.'
