Bong Joon Ho's 'Mickey 17' Set for Berlin Film Festival Premiere Following South Korea Debut
Bong Joon Ho's latest film, ‘Mickey 17,’ is set to premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. While it is not the film's world premiere, there are indications that it might debut in South Korea before the Berlin screening. The film is scheduled to release in South Korea on February 28, with a global release to follow a week later.
The science fiction movie, backed by Warner Bros with a budget of $118 million, features Robert Pattinson in the lead role. Its domestic release date was recently advanced from April 18 to March 7, moving it up from the Easter weekend.
‘Mickey 17’ based on Edward Ashton's novel Mickey7, explores the story of Mickey Barnes (played by Pattinson), known as an Expendable. He is part of a human expedition to colonize the icy world of Niflheim, repeatedly regenerated after deadly missions with his memories largely preserved. This film marks Barnes' understanding of his perilous role after multiple regenerations.
Directed, written, and produced by Joon Ho under his Offscreen banner, the film also sees contributions from producers Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner of Plan B, and Dooho Choi of Kate Street Pictures.
News of the Berlin premiere was first reported by Variety, following widespread speculation on Korean social media. The Berlin Film Festival, where ‘Mickey 17’ will be featured, is set to run from February 13 to 23, with the complete lineup announced on January 21.
Robert Pattinson has previously found success with Warner Bros through ‘The Batman,’ which earned over $772 million worldwide. Joon Ho's earlier film ‘Parasite’ also achieved significant acclaim, grossing over $262 million globally.
