Box Office: ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ To Open With Franchise Low Of $65 Million Domestic
‘Venom: The Last Dance’ could bring some much needed life to the October box office this weekend — aiming for a domestic debut of $65 million and $100 million overseas. However, Tom Hardy’s third instalment could open with a franchise low in North America.
The first Venom film opened with $80.2 million back in 2018 (October). The sequel from 2021, ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage,’ opened to $90 million, which was a major win for Sony during the beginning of the pandemic recovery. ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ will likely claim top place with the biggest October opening for 2024, as ‘Joker: Foile à Deux’ tanked with a staggering $37 million debut following a slew of horrific reviews from fans and critics alike.
‘Venom 3’ carries a budget of $120 million, and should have no issues making that back within its first weekend run.
The film has already launched in China ahead of the weekend, and earned a major win of $9.3 million on Wednesday. This caused Sony to ramp up its international forecast to a $100 million opening, from $85 million.
‘Venom: The Last Dance’ was written and directed by Kelly Marcel, from a story co-created by Venom actor Tom Hardy. Additional cast members include Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Stephen Graham, Peggy Lu, Clark Backo, and Alanna Ubach.
The general consensus for ‘Venom 3’ is poor, with Rotten Tomatoes critics granting the film 37% from 87 verified critic reviews.
