George Nolfi, recognized for his writing contributions to films like ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ and ‘Ocean’s 12,’ has been selected to pen ‘New Jedi Order,’ a Star Wars movie centered on Daisy Ridley’s sequel trilogy character; Rey.
Nolfi boarding the project showcases the studios’ confidence in the project, first unveiled nearly two years ago at the Star Wars Celebration in London, despite several notable writers previously exiting the project.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a documentary filmmaker, is set to make her narrative feature directorial debut with this film. Ridley will return as Rey Skywalker, in which the story unfolds 15 years after the events of ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ (2019), with Rey now mentoring a new generation of Jedis.
Originally, Damon Lindelof (‘Watchmen,’ ‘Lost’) and Justin Britt-Gibson were assigned to the script, before Obaid-Chinoy joined the team. By April 2023, when Ridley’s involvement was confirmed, Steven Knight, creator and writer of ‘Peaky Blinders’ was actively working on the screenplay. However, by October 2024, Knight had departed from the project, possibly to focus on the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Netflix film while having creative disagreements with the studio.
The script's prolonged development has delayed the start of production, which had been anticipated to follow the release of ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ set for May 22, 2026.
The next ‘Star Wars’ movie to begin shooting will instead be an untitled project directed by Shawn Levy, recently gaining momentum with Ryan Gosling potentially joining the cast, as reported exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter this week.
