Greta Lee, known for her breakout role in the acclaimed 2023 drama ‘Past Lives,’ is set to step behind the camera for the first time.

Lee will make her directorial debut with ‘The Eyes Are the Best Part,’ an adaptation of Monika Kim’s psychological horror novel, developed by Searchlight Pictures. In addition to directing, Lee will also pen the screenplay.

The project is being produced by Matt Jackson and Joanne Lee of Jackson Pictures, along with Lulu Wang and Dani Melia under Wang’s production company, Local Time. Wang and Melia previously collaborated on the 2019 dramedy ‘The Farewell’ and the Prime Video series ‘Expats.’ Author Monika Kim will serve as an executive producer.

Published in June 2024 by Erewhon Books, ‘The Eyes Are the Best Part’ explores the disintegration of a family and the rise of a female serial killer, told through a Korean-American lens. Set in Los Angeles, the story follows Ji-won, a woman whose world falls apart after her father’s affair and subsequent departure. In response, she discovers a chilling and creative outlet for her anger and appetite.

Jackson Pictures’ previous credits include the Whitney Houston biopic ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody,’ Aaron Sorkin’s ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7,’ and ‘Molly’s Game.’ The company is currently in postproduction on David Robert Mitchell’s ‘Flowervale Street’ for Warner Bros. and Gina Prince-Bythewood’s adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ at Paramount.
