Following last year’s holiday success of his unique take on ‘Nosferatu,’ Robert Eggers appears to be keeping the Christmas momentum going with his next project. Warner Bros is developing a new adaptation of ‘A Christmas Carol,’ with Eggers set to write and direct the film.
While no casting deals are currently in place, insiders reveal that Eggers is crafting the role of Ebenezer Scrooge with Willem Dafoe in mind. The two have a strong creative partnership, with Dafoe appearing in each of Eggers’ last three films.
Production will be handled by Chris Columbus and Elenor Columbus through their Maiden Voyage banner, with Eggers also serving as a producer.
Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ has been reimagined countless times, chronicling the journey of the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge as he is visited by the ghost of his business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. The story’s haunting atmosphere and 19th-century setting seem tailor-made for Eggers’ signature style, both visually and thematically.
Eggers' ‘Nosferatu’ marked a major milestone in his career, grossing $181 million globally, including $95 million in the U.S. The film also earned critical acclaim, leading to four Academy Award nominations in Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling.
Up next for Eggers is ‘Werwulf,’ a project for Focus Features that is expected to begin filming later this year.
Dafoe continues to be a central figure in Eggers’ creative universe, having starred in ‘The Lighthouse,’ ‘The Northman,’ and ‘Nosferatu.’
